My name is Philip Manser and I am a freelance web developer. Here’s a short list of the skills I have to offer. I’m currently available, if you’re interested in hiring. Just visit my contact page and leave me a message.

Java — I spent a year and a half programming in this, my first programming language. I haven’t programmed anything in this language recently, but I’m sure it’s like riding a bike (i.e. — you never forget). I like Java because it had wonderful structure to it’s libraries (as opposed to PHP and it’s rather inconsistent naming styles) and because it tended to force programmers to code in an object-oriented and reusable style (as opposed to, again, PHP).

PHP — Shortly after I finished my Java training, I began teaching myself this language as a means to add some features to my church’s website. Two and a half years later, and I have become quite engrossed in it. I knock this language often, but I still use it often and recognize that it is quite better than some alternatives.

SQL — About a year and a half ago, I began learning this along with overall database design and management. I’ve used MySQL, Oracle, PostgreSQL, and SQL Server, with most of my time spent using a MySQL server. I am comfortable using either a graphical or command-line interface to administer a database.

Unix/Linux — All web development that I have done has been hosted on Unix or Linux servers. As a result, I have spent a decent amount of time using the command line to move files about, change permissions, open files in pico, and the like. Having a Mac has also helped to encourage my experimentation with the command line as well.

xHTML — I keep as up to date as possible on web standards and try to do my part to keep the web clean and accessible.

CSS — As part of my efforts to code cleanly, I’ve worked a lot toward a complete understanding of CSS. Keeping the design and the content separate is high on my priorities list for both accessibility’s and maintenance’s sake.

Flash — Although I prefer to do most of my work in xHTML, CSS, and JavaScript, I have also spent some time learning and developing in Flash. I do enjoy the ease of use, but I tend to solve all my problems with ActionScript.

Python — I began studying this language about a year ago, but beyond a few simple scripts, have been unable to put it to serious use.

Ruby – Working on this.
